Annoucement from Weymouth & District Round Table Weymouth and District Round Table No. 173 after some very long and hard soul searching have decided that despite the great success of the Weymouth Carnival in its 50th year feel that for the event to prosper and grow it will NO longer be able to been the main organiser of the Carnival. Weymouth Carnival has become such a consuming activity that the small current membership of Weymouth Round Table (8) feel they cannot provide the time and resources required to maintain the high standards that people of Weymouth and the holiday makers expect from such a prestigious event on the South coast. The concept of Weymouth Carnival as a fun and fun-raising event has worked for the last 50 years and has raised over £1 million for local and locally connected national charities benefiting many 1,000s of people. Even in its Golden Jubilee the members of Weymouth Round Table hope to donate in excess of £30,000. This all said the club feel that Weymouth Carnival as an event needs to move forward to meet the challenges of the forthcoming build up to the 2012 Olympics for the borough of Weymouth & Portland. With the reasons stated above the club know that the myriad of organisations who have been increasing their help and support to Carnival over the years can build on the legacy of Carnival and introduce new fresh and exciting ideas and events. Although Weymouth Round Table have stepped down as the main organisers of Carnival they wish to reassure the town that it will support any organisations or individuals to the fullest for this wonderful event to continue. Weymouth Round Table Chairman Andrew Cooke comments: “This decision was difficult for all the members of the club as Carnival is very close to our hearts. On behalf on of Tablers past and present I would like to take this opportunity to thank the council for allowing us to run this event for the last 50 years. We would also like to thank all the groups and businesses who have come together every year to support us and of course a big big thank you to the people of Weymouth and holidaymakers who have given so generously of the years helping us raise such large sums of money for charity.” The proposed Weymouth Carnival Chairman for 2008 Kevin Talbot said “As a member of the club for over 17 years it was a very hard decision to make but I fully support the final decision made by the club and am optimistic that despite Weymouth Round Table stepping down as the main organisers the people of Weymouth will come forward to continue this great event and make it become bigger than ever” Click here to enter the main Weymouth & District Round Table web site. |
